NSA and X-PUG Combine for the NSA Nationals November 18th & 19th

9 October 2006

The NSA and X-Pug are combining for the NSA Nationals event on November 18th and 19th. The NSA will run prelims on Saturday and finals on Sunday. The X-Pug will run games prior to finals (approx. 8AM to 11AM) and after finals (approx. 2PM to 5PM) on Sunday.

Competing Nationals players will be able to play in the X-Pug at no additional cost. So, if you don't make the finals, you'll still be able to get another full day of play! Finals players will also have the chance to compete, since there won't be any overlap. Non-NSA players will also be able to join in on the fun for $20 (entry + air). FPO will be enforced for NSA Nationals and X-Pug to keep a level playing field. The WPN paint at OCA works great and the pricing is very reasonable for field paint.

The loader rules for this X-Pug event will be slightly modified to accommodate Nationals players who will most likely be playing to the equipment limitations of the NSA. Stick feed players will have no additional restrictions. Players with loaders may only carry ~50 balls, and may not reload during games.

X-PUG Event 2 Summary

5 October 2006

The second X-Pug occurred this past Saturday at Splat Factory in Brea, CA. This event really proved the flexibility of the format. Due to several tardy players, we had to switch teams mid-event! So, while we ran the first round of round robins with 4 teams of 4 players, it quickly grew to 4 teams of 6. I noticed a few players getting gassed, so I re-rolled the players into 6 teams of 4. That gave players plenty of time to rest between rounds and things seemed to roll a little smoother after that.

One of the highlights for me was seeing the collection of markers in the parking lot. Derrick Obatake brought out his Duck (the late Dave Loo’s personal marker), as well as his own box gun (the first one ever made!). Tim Yip’s orange Duck, Brian Higashi’s Carter Comp with WGP slam change, and my own Duck and Box guns were out there, as well. But, we all dispersed before Derrick offered to 1x1 for pinks!

I saw a lot of new faces at the field, in addition to the usual assortment of tourney players. Brian Higashi from the Kamikaze Shooters was out there playing for the first time in over 10 years! And he can still shoot just as straight as he did back in the day. Members of the Blowfish, Special Ed, PSH Factory, Splat Factory, Flipped Out, L.A. Hitmen, Who Flung Goo, and Hard Eight were out there playing with and against each other. Hawaii 5-0 from Third Eye Vision played extremely well. Not many people can say they bunked Derrick out of the snake (I know I can’t!). I talked to a couple of teams that will be looking to pick that guy up for NSA/OSC rosters in ’07.

All in all, it looked like a fun event (I’m really hoping to get a chance to play in one, eventually). Players were able to play a 4 team round robin, a 6 team round robin, 30 minutes of 1x1’s, and big games with whomever still had the energy to play (not many!) for only $20 entry, including all-day air. Add in the opportunity to play with some of the coolest pump players around and that’s a tough deal to beat.

A special thanks to Splat Factory! The staff was helpful and courteous, and the field was awesome, as usual. Please support pump friendly fields! Thanks to LJ Passo who shot and edited all photos on the site (there are some very cool action shots from this past event).
